Will it fit my car?
To check if the multimac child seats will fit your car we need you to supply a car manufacturer and model. Choose your make and model using the menu on the right hand side, or alternatively download our fitting list.
FITTING LIST
The MULTIMAC is approved as a “semi-universal” CRS [child restraint system] which means it does not fit all cars, and we have to give a specific list of which model MULTIMAC will fit each car.
The ‘Rules’ for a semi-universal CRS are that it should attach to the existing, lower, adult seat belt mountings, and use any additional supports supplied by the manufacturer of the CRS. The Approval test rig has adult seat belt mountings fitted in the usual rear seat positions [to satisfy UNECE regulation 14], below the seat, in the ‘floor’, and the MULTIMAC tethers simply bolt to these.
STANDARD FITTING
The fitting list results detail the majority of cars which have this standard seat belt arrangement, so the MULTIMAC simply bolts in.
NON-STANDARD FITTING
MAJOR
Although most traditional cars still use these seat belt positions, increasingly ‘family’ MPV and SUV type vehicles have the seat belt buckles attached to the seat, which can tilt forwards, so there is no MULTIMAC mounting point in the floor.
As two examples, the Ford Focus Hatchback and Estate have ‘normal’ fittings, but the C-Max does not. The standard VW Golf does, but the Golf-Plus does not.
Medium-term this will not be a problem, as the seat mountings have to be at least as strong as the seat-belt mountings, and we will be able to make an adapter plate to bolt to these, and attach to it the MULTIMAC tether strap. Alternatively, in different vehicles, it may be possible to bolt the eyebolt through the rear floor, behind and below the back seat. The specification is that the fitting has to withstand a load of 25kN.
If you have a car like this, please contact MULTIMAC for a solution, and also lobby the car manufacturer: they will only respond to customer pressure. Long term, our aim is that the manufacturers will have to provide MULTIMAC mountings in all cars, in the same way as they now provide ISOFIX. All it requires from them is 2 captive 12mm nuts welded in the car floor in the appropriate positions.
MINOR
In traditional cars, the rear seat belt buckles passed through the gap between the rear seat back, and the base. However, some modern cars now have a higher joint-line, level with the ISOFIX points, and the seat belt buckles protrude through individual holes in the seat base. This often means that while the adult-belt mounting bolts are in the perfect position for the MULTIMAC tether straps, there is no gap in the seat for the tether straps to pass through.
The solution is to create a large trimmed ‘button-hole’ in the seat: this is something our trimmers could easily do, and you may have a local trimmer who could do it for you. Again, please contact MULTIMAC, and also lobby the car manufacturer, so they know how much of an issue this is.
