Safety

Multimac - Designed for safety

The main reason for a child seat is safety.

The Multimac greatly exceeds all the crash test requirements of ECE 44-04.

This is remarkable because it has to cope with dramatically variable loads – from a single 9 month old to 4 x 12 year old test dummies - in fact to cover all the scenarios, 11 different child age/load combinations have to be crash tested!

Multimac achieves high standards of safety because of it’s unique energy absorbing design which includes:

  • Special grade aluminium construction
  • Patented support legs that deform to absorb energy in an accident
  • The patented Adjustamac/chest pad design, which also absorbs energy
  • The tether strap mountings
  • The 5-point harness

Fully tested

Multimac has been developed and tested involving BSI, VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) , TRL (Transport Research Laboratory). The British Government and The European Government as well as VTI in Sweden. It has been granted international patents and cannot be copied.

It all adds up to a unique multiple child seat that is safe, secure and made to the highest possible standards.

Testing

When the Multimac is put on the test seat, it looks like a ‘sofa on a motorbike’, with the 2 outer children overhanging the test seat. And in any of the 4 seats, there can either be: no dummy, a 9 month old, an 18 month old, a 3 year old, a 6 year old or a 12 year old.

To simulate all possible worst case loadings, we have to do 11 crashes for each version of the seat. And this involves 28 dummies, which all have to be rebuilt after every crash. And we have to rent the test house for a week, rather than a half day, and it may not be available. And where we test [Sweden] they do not have 4 x12 year old dummies, so 2 have to be rented in.

So the logistics and cost of testing the Multimac are huge compared with regular child seats.

What insurance companies say about multimac

Norwich Union

Norwich Union

Fitting a Multimac will convert your car from a 5-seater to a 6-seater. It has been discussed by the ABI (Association of British Insurers) who have welcomed it as a further contribution to child safety, and report that its members will not change premiums, but you should however, advise them that you are using a Multimac. Norwich Union have specifically stated that: ‘The Multimac is Norwich Union approved, and fitment will not invalidate your policy’
